New Ingredient Labels Identify Bugs

January 8th, 2009

Carmine and cochineal extract, starting January 2011, will have to be identified on labels for products in which they are contained. Carmine and cochineal extract are used to create the red color in some foods, drinks and cosmetics. These extracts are derived from dried, ground-up cochineal bugs and currently fall under the umbrella of “color additives” on labels.

The FDA has made the change in labels mandatory in two years, however, companies can voluntarily change labels earlier if they so wish. The cause for this change arises from the fact that there is a very small percentage of the population that can suffer from an allergic reaction to these extracts. In addition to potential allergy reactions, the FDA has reportedly also put the requirement into effect because of pressure from the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI).

This pressure to make the carmine and cochineal extract identified in product labels brings attention to the whole practice of listing ingredients on labels. As a consumer who picks up a product, the label should clearly identify what is being purchased. For example if purchasing a diet pill, the ingredient label should state what exactly is in the capsules. Often times companies market their products as pure, however after evaluation of the label, it can be seen that there are additional fillers and additives. A label that says pure hoodia, should only have hoodia listed under the ingredient section, nothing else.

While the FDA has made it virtually safe to buy food and medicinal products, there are some loopholes that are not regulated as closely. These loopholes are present in the herbal segment of product availability. As a consumer of herbal remedies, it is wise to research the herb that you are purchasing and based on your own decision purchase products.

Why Should You Drink Water?

January 7th, 2009

Did you know that the human body is more that 65% water? Everything from our blood, muscles, brain, and bones are comprised of a significant percentage of water. Water is a vital element for sustaining life and body functions. Unfortunately most of us do not drink nearly enough water and are dehydrated. Dehydration can have a negative effect on our bodily systems. To further illustrate this read the following.

Often times thirst can be mistaken for hunger. If we feel hungry, it is often that we are not hungry, but rather thirsty. A way to be sure that we are giving our body adequate hydration is to drink water even when we are not thirsty. Usually, once we realize that we are thirsty, it is too late and we are already dehydrated.

Aside from keeping us hydrated, drinking water is also necessary for those who are trying to lose weight. Drinking water not only helps us to feel full, but it also helps to flush our body of toxins and helps aid fiber in the digestion process.

If you often feel tired, it could be because you are not hydrated enough. When there is not enough water in the blood, it slows down the body functions and often leaves us feeling sluggish and tired. Headaches and constipation can also result from dehydration.

To prevent dehydration from occurring, it is recommended that ½ to ¾ of an ounce of water be consumed daily per pound of body weight. This will ensure that the body is properly flushed of toxins and waste. Staying hydrated will also help keep the skin looking young and plump and full. Water can also give definition to muscles.

If drinking water seems too bland, water can be mixed with low calorie and low sugar mixes, as well as whey protein. For those who want to drop some pounds, hoodia extract can be mixed with water to suppress the appetite.

Benefits of Building a Strong Core

January 6th, 2009

There are many benefits to building a strong abdominal core. Aside from looking great, building a strong core can help build a strong base for the rest of our body movements. This in turn can yield greater athletic performance, reduce the likelihood of injury as well as reduce the amount of existing pain.

There are many muscles which make up the core of our bodies. These muscles are not limited to the abdomen, but rather include a variety of muscles which include muscles from the back of the neck all the way down to the thighs. These are big and powerful muscles which provide a foundation for movements for the rest of our body.

Traditionally, sit-ups and crunches were thought to be the best and most effective technique for building a strong core, and to lose weight, however, aside from traditional crunches there are many other pieces of equipment and exercises that can be used to build a strong mid section.

Popular in health clubs across the country, BOSU is a piece of equipment that helps strengthen the core and improve balance. BOSU is an inflatable dome set atop a platform that is approximately two feet in diameter. BOSU helps to strengthen the core because of its ever changing surface which forces the use of core muscles to keep balance. With this piece of equipment, the body is always compensating for the unstable motion, thus it works the muscles more and builds a stronger core.

It is important to remember however, that no matter how many crunches you do, the diet that you eat is equally important. A diet that is high in fat, sugar, and carbohydrates will do nothing to show off the work and effort that was put forth. Eating a diet that is well balanced with protein, carbohydrates and fruits and vegetables on the other hand will help to get rid of tummy fat and show off the six-pack that you have been working on. To combat some of these cravings, trying an appetite suppressant such as hoodia gordonii, may be just the answer.

Benefits of Coconut Oil for Health

January 5th, 2009

While the taste and scent of coconut may remind one of a far off tropical destination, the benefits of coconut oil exceed that of creating exotic smelling sunscreens and lotions. Coconut oil is useful in many applications and can be found in both western medicines as well as ancient and developing cultural medicine.

Coconuts grow in warm and tropical areas and have several medicinal and nutritional values similar to other crops of warm areas like hoodia gordonii. Coconut oil is considered a quick source of energy, and can be found in the best diet pills, energy bars and drinks as well as other snack foods for people to grab on the run.

Despite the fact that coconut oil has gotten a bad rap in the past, there are many healthful benefits of coconut. While coconut oil was notoriously labeled as high in saturated fat, recent studies have shown that diets that have some amount of fat in them help to keep weight off.  Despite the push since the 1970s to eat a low fat diet, many Americans have increased in weight and size. For this reason it can be argued that diets that are extremely low in fat can have a negative effect on weight loss, and that some amount of fat should be included in the diet to achieve optimal health. Keeping in mind the negative effects that can be attributed to extremely low fat diets, one other reason as to why coconut oil is a good option for health and those trying to lose weight is because when one consumes coconut oil, the overall calorie intake for the day seems to decrease since coconut oil is satisfying.

Aside from dietary benefits, coconut oil is also a widely used and effective antibacterial agent. Coconut oil can be used in the treatment and prevention of bacterial infections, as well as viruses. Coconut oil can also help the body absorb vital minerals such as calcium much more effectively than if not used as well as aid in digestion and promote good bowel health.

Cosmetically, coconut oil is known not only for its fragrant appeal, but for its ability to soften and moisturize the skin. For this reason coconut oil can be found in everything from lip balm and shampoo to sunscreen.

Prevent Stress This Holiday Season

December 22nd, 2008

Between the hustle and bustle of the holiday festivities, there may seem like an overwhelming amount of tasks to accomplish. Aside from the regular activities and responsibilities, having to shop for the perfect gift and entertaining guests may seem like a lot to accomplish. Follow the following tips to help reduce stress this holiday season.

  1. Remember that everything does not have to be perfect. It is the little imperfections that build lasting and pleasurable memories. How boring would everything be if things always worked according to plan? If while making dinner, some food accidentally gets burned, it is not the end of the world. Instead it is a very memorable experience and a great story to tell the grandkids.
  2. Take time to relax. Tending to the needs of others 24/7 can be more than exhausting. Taking a little time for oneself is the best way to take care of others. Even if five minutes are all you can spare, five minutes alone are five minutes well spent.  Take this time to close your eyes and count your blessings. Enjoy a warm beverage such as hoodia tea, or hot chocolate. It will do wonders.
  3. Get enough sleep: Not getting enough shut eye can lead to many unhealthy side-effects. Since sleep deprivation and reaction time are related, getting enough sleep will keep you on top of your game. Since lack of sleep is also related to weight gain, getting the recommended 7 hours of sleep a night can help you to stay slim and trim.
  4. Watch your diet and exercise. Getting enough exercise and watching the diet are very important to keeping fit during the holidays and is the best prevention in putting on extra pounds going into the New Year. A supplemental diet pill can also assist in weight loss.

Tips for Eating in Wintertime

December 19th, 2008

Wintertime drives many people into the comforts of their homes, and often leads to the consumption of comfort foods which can be high in caloric value. Foods that we often crave when the weather gets colder such as mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese are very high in calories and fat.

While you should not give up comforting favorites, there are some things you can do to offset the high calorie count that is associated with these types of foods.

  1. Substitute low or nonfat ingredients for the regular versions. Without sacrificing flavors, fatty ingredients can be substituted for their slimmer versions. This works well with dairy products such as sour cream and cheeses. Also some cheeses are better for you than others. For example hard cheeses are often better in nutritional value than softer cheeses. Try adding parmesan cheese in place of mozzarella; this will surely add a new flavor depth to favorites, a real grown-up twist.
  2. Hit the gym: going to the gym and working off the extra calories that are consumed in winter foods will help you feel better about your indulgences as well as help you lose weight.
  3. Eat fruits and vegetables: If you feel healthier in the summertime than you do in winter there may be some reasoning behind it. Winter foods tend to be heavier than summer foods. In the summer tons of fruits and vegetables are in season and that means we eat lighter and fresher. However in the winter there are also fruits and vegetables that are in season. For example winter is the best time for oranges and other citrus such as grapefruit. Even if you live in a colder climate, you can start your day with a great juicy orange. This will put a fresh twist on your day.

These are only a few examples of what can be done for wintertime eating. Substituting a snack for a protein shake can also add nutrition while providing a feeling of fullness. Modifying the diet with simple modifications can really make a big difference.

Your guests will never know that the fat and calories have been reduced.

  1. 2. Go Flourless: there are many recipes on the internet for flourless desserts. These are often rich, creamy and delicious. No one will miss the extra carbohydrates.
  3. Fruit: No one ever said that dessert had to be a heavy calorie laden affair. Dessert can be a delicious fruit that is spiked with an alcohol based sauce and served with a dollop of fresh whipped cream.  Snacking on fruit is the best way to lose weight.

  5. Go Sugar Free: Substitute sugar free ingredients for regular ingredients. This works well with pudding and jell-o products.

Healthy Meals for Busy Families

December 17th, 2008

Between soccer practice, work, and school, it may seem as though there is little time to accomplish the tasks at hand for any given day, let alone eat and prepare a healthy and nutritious meal. The following meal suggestion will help to prepare in advance necessary quick meal staples.

Stock the Pantry: A well stocked pantry is the key to being able to prepare a quick and nutritious meal in a matter of seconds. A well stocked pantry should have staples such as canned vegetables, olive oil, broth, brown rice, pasta, canned tomatoes, beets, and beans such as black beans, kidney beans. These are inexpensive and nutritional meal staples.

Shop and Chop: After a trip to the grocery store or market, preparing fruits and vegetables for quick use later is a great idea to promote healthy snacking as well as easy meal preparation. Preparation such as chopping carrots, celery, and onions will greatly reduce the amount of time that is required at meal preparation. These also make quick snacks for those watching the diet.

Pre-cook and freeze: Cooking large amounts of ground beef or chicken when time is available and then refreezing for use at a later time is a great idea to have available when you need to prepare a meal fast. Since it is important to have a protein at each meal, have available cooked meats on hand are very beneficial, this will also eliminate the need to have a whey protein shake at each meal to get in the required protein. Also, it is wise to cook double portions of meals and freezing the leftovers. Dividing the extra portions up into individual containers so that they are available at anytime make eating on the run a healthy option.

Finally, preparing multiple meals in advance is a great idea for those who want to lose weight, as it prevents grazing in the kitchen and consuming unhealthy snacks.
